This service provides daily care and attention to the tracheostomy at home. The care is performed by our specialized nursing staff. The care of each tracheostomy depends on the type of tracheostomy (i.e., double-lumen or single-lumen), the nature of it (whether it is a speaking tracheostomy or not), and its diameter.
The goal of nursing care for the tracheostomy is to maintain airway patency, keep the tube clean, and perform suctioning of any secretions.
Daily care of the tracheostomy includes:
- Checking for proper function and patency of the airway
- Inspection for signs of inflammation
- Changing the gauze
- Removal of secretions and dirty material
- Cleaning the skin around the tracheostomy with antiseptic to prevent further infections
- Applying a clean tracheostomy collar, checking the bandage
- Applying sterile tracheostomy gauze
